Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – Messiah College rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth inning to upset the No. 4 Salisbury University baseball team, 6-3, at the SU Baseball Field on Monday.
The Messiah (7-19) comeback spoiled a solid 5 2/3-innings start from Jeff Hoffman, who surrendered just four hits and one run while walking three and striking out five.
Salisbury (23-6) staked the senior right-hander to a 2-0 lead through three innings on an a Quinn Griffith infield single that scored Joey Jones in the first and a sacrifice fly to center, also by Griffith, with one out in the third.
The Falcons got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth on a Jacob Spengle single to center that scored Jon Lapp with one out to make it 2-1.The Sea Gulls responded in their half of the frame as Kyle Hayman scored on a throwing error by Ryan Brown behind the plate. Hayman reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a Ken O'Neill single and third on a Bill Root fielder's choice.
Messiah added a run in the seventh to cut the lead to 3-2 when Brown doubled home Matt Turman off reliever Danny Druzgala.
Turman led off the ninth with a single up the middle and stole second with one out before Lapp lashed a double down the left-field line to score Turman to tie the game, 3-3. Brown followed with a single, plating Lapp from third with the go-ahead run off Stephen Miller (1-1). On for Miller, Kyle Hamby allowed a double down the right-field line to Paul Mellinger to score Brown from third for a 5-3 lead and Mellinger came around when Griffith's throw on a groundball by John Brubaker was off the mark.
Galen Halteman (2-2) earned the win for the Falcons with five innings of in relief of starter Paul Broomell. Halteman scattered four hits and one unearned run with one strikeout. Zach Adams pitched a perfect ninth, fanning two, for his fourth save. Miller took the loss for the Sea Gulls, allowing four hits and three runs in 1 1/3 innings.
Griffith was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Jones went 1-for-3 with two runs scored to lead Salisbury. Brown batted 2-for-4 with a walk, run and two RBIs for Messiah.
SU is back in action on Friday, hosting Stevenson University at 3:30 p.m., in the first of a three-game Capital Athletic Conference set.
