NEW YORK – The Salisbury University volleyball team opened its 2012 season in style with a pair of 3-0 victories over the State University of New York at New Paltz and New York University, the host of this weekend's NYU Invitational, on Friday.

Senior Carley Todd came out the gate quickly, notching a triple-double in the opening match of the year, registering 11 kills, 27 assists and 22 digs as the Gulls took down New Paltz 25-11, 25-21, 27-25.

With just one error on 21 attempts, Todd's .476 hitting percentage was the best of any player in the match as senior Kelly Vieira added seven kills and 15 digs.

Freshman Ashlyn Tapley impressed in her first collegiate match, putting up eight kills and matched Vieira as the pair each had three block assists.

The Sea Gulls (2-0) did not let up as they took on the host Violets to close out the evening. Salisbury rolled to a 25-14, 25-21, 25-16 victory over NYU, behind another big performance by Todd. The Greenlawn, N.Y., native registered 30 assists in the contest to go with six kills and eight more digs.

Sophomore Mattie Smith posted a team-high eight kills in the match as Salisbury was able to get every player in uniform time on the court.

Senior Chelsea Glowacki and Tapley each had seven kills while Glowacki and Vieira each had a pair of block assists.

Salisbury saved some of its best offensive work for the second set of the match, hitting nearly .500 with only three errors and 19 kills in the frame; Tapley had five of her seven kills in the second set.

Sophomore libero Michelle Meehan had 15 digs in the match, to go with 12 against New Paltz earlier in the day.

Friday's wins mark the fourth consecutive year that the Sea Gulls have opened with two wins on their first day of competition.

Salisbury will close out action in its opening tournament on Saturday, when the Sea Gulls will face the State University of New York at Geneseo at 10 a.m., and Stevens Institute at noon. Salisbury will play its first home match of the year on Tuesday, Sept. 4, when the Gulls host No. 1 Christopher Newport University.
