Perry pushes Gulls past Lynchburg with overtime goal

Box Score

WOODBRIDGE, Va. – After nearly 100 minutes of play, junior midfielder Jake Perry netted the game-winning goal, in overtime, against Lynchburg College as the No. 19 Salisbury University men's soccer team prevailed, 1-0.

Senior midfielder Pat Callahan started the run, dipping past a Lynchburg defender in the right corner, centering a pass to Perry, who sent the ball into the lower left corner for the golden goal. The winning goal was scored with just 39 seconds remaining in the first overtime period.

Salisbury (5-1) outshot the Hornets (1-4) 26-9 while holding a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Sea Gulls looked as though they would take the lead in the second half as freshmen midfielder Ramadan Bayyan sent a shot past Hornet keeper Michael Releford (10 saves) but defender Josh Hinkle was on the goal line to turn away the shot.

Senior goalkeeper John Vnenchak made three saves throughout the match to collect his fifth win in the net on the year.

Six yellow cards were handed out throughout the hard-fought contest.

SU will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 15, as the Sea Gulls travel to Frostburg State University in the team's first Capital Athletic Conference match of the season.
