Stouffer leads Sea Gulls as SU outlasts Southern Virginia, 3-1

Box Score

BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Salisbury University volleyball team outlasted Southern Virginia University on Saturday afternoon, 3-1 (17-25, 26-24, 26-24, 27-25), winning the last three sets by a combined six points for its 22nd win of the season.

The Sea Gulls dropped the first set, after SVU went on a 9-0 run, with the score tied 12-12, to take a 21-12 lead. The Gulls didn't recover and the Knights took a 1-0 lead.

After another close start to the second set, Southern Virginia took another lead, 19-14, after two Sea Gull attack errors and three-straight kills late in the game.

From there, Salisbury was sparked by a kill from senior Jess Tallant and rode a 12-5 run to tie the match, 1-1.

Junior Mattie Smith led the Sea Gulls during the run, with three kills, and freshman Katie Stouffer finished off the set with a kill.

Stouffer paced SU (22-4) with 15 kills in the match, while junior Julie Poston finished in double digits with 12, as well.

Salisbury trailed early in the third set, 4-3, but a kill by junior Kirby Buttry put the Gulls on a 6-3 run to take 10-7 lead; Stouffer tallied four kills in the run, while junior Nikki Binetti added another.

The set remained close for its entirety. Southern Virginia led, 24-23, before kills from Binetti and Stouffer sandwiched a Knight attack error, allowing SU to take a 2-1 lead in the set; it marked the second-consecutive set that Stouffer ended the set with the winning kill.

Two kills from Stouffer, along with kills from Binetti and senior Tam Weems, gave the Sea Gulls a 10-6 lead to start the final set.

The Knights eventually tied the set, 12-12, and kept it close until the teams were tied, 25-25.

With the scored tied and needing two points to take the victory, Smith tallied her final kill, before the match closed with a service ace by the Sea Gulls.

Sophomore Kacey Franz led the team with 22 assists, and junior Michelle Meehan led with 11 digs.

The Sea Gulls will return home on Tuesday, October 22, to host Goucher College at Maggs Physical Activities Center at 7 p.m.
