Jantzen's two goals lead Salisbury to 3-0 win over Rowan

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 7 Salisbury University field hockey team earned a 3-0 win against Rowan University Wednesday night at Sea Gull Stadium.

The Sea Gulls (7-2) got a pair of goals from sophomore Courtney Jantzen and a strong defensive effort throughout the contest, led by sophomore Amanda Cooper, to claim the win.

The game remained scoreless through the game's first 17 minutes, despite Salisbury holding an 11-0 edge in shots during that time. The Sea Gulls broke through in the 18th minute off the team's fifth penalty corner chance of the game.

Senior Stacey Lamboni inserted the ball from the left side, to classmate Katie Hastings well outside of the top of the circle. After a short stop on the stick of junior Mallory Elliott, the ball found its way to freshman Abbey Shobe in the middle and then freshman Yumi Kim on the right side of the cage.

Kim held the ball for a moment, pulling Rowan goalkeeper Steph Colombo toward her before a quick pass to the left post where Jantzen was ready to pop the ball into the back of the cage for the 1-0 lead.

Just one minute later, Cooper made the lead stand up, knocking a shot from Rowan's Sam Browne just wide, preserving the shutout.

The shot on goal was the first of four shots in the first half for the Profs (4-5), but the Salisbury defense would not allow the ball to find the cage, holding the one-goal advantage in the first half, while leading in shots, 18-4, and penalty corners, 8-3.

Salisbury put the first shot of the second half on goal just 19 seconds into the period and continued to turn up the intensity from there, though the Gulls struggled to put a ball home for an insurance goal.

The Sea Gulls had six penalty corner chances in the first 15 minutes of the second half, leading to seven shots before getting one through.

After coming up with a turnover in the midfield, sophomore Samantha Johnson sent a perfect lead pass through the Rowan defense for Jantzen. She took on one defender, then Colombo, slapping the ball into the left side of the cage for the 2-0 lead.

Defense led to offense on Salisbury's final tally of the night when Hastings stood up to an on-rushing Rowan midfielder, took the ball away and headed toward the offensive end. Hastings spun around a defender and sent a ball into the circle, where it was deflected by a Profs defender and into the cage for the final 3-0 margin.

Junior Rachel Clewer made three saves in goal to earn her second solo shutout of the year. Her toughest tests came on back-to-back plays, stopping Jenna Pressler's try in the 48th minute before a penalty corner. On the ensuing corner, Erika Mecchella got a shot off from the top of the circle, which Clewer calmly kicked away.

Salisbury will be off for a week before entertaining York (Pa.) College next Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Sea Gull Stadium. That match is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
