Late goals push Gulls past St. Mary's; clinch top seed in tournament

Box Score

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Late-game goals by juniors Matt Greene and Tanner East sealed a 2-0 victory for the No. 12 Salisbury University men's soccer team over St. Mary's College of Maryland Sunday afternoon, clinching the top seed in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament.

The first half of the match proved dominant for the Sea Gulls (15-2, 7-0 CAC), totaling eight shots and five corners to the Seahawks' two and one, respectively. Coming out in the second, the pace stayed strong offensively, adding nine more attempts before Greene placed the first in the back of the net.

In the 81st minute, junior Logan Becker played a ball into the 18-yard box that Seahawks' goalkeeper Austin Brown interrupted. Unable to clear the ball out, Brown found the ball behind him where Greene capitalized on the goal to break the tie. The tally is his fourth of the season.

With less than two minutes remaining in the contest, East placed in an insurance goal for his team-leading eighth of the season. Awarded the assist on the play was senior captain Adam Quigley, making a short pass to East for the finish.

For the match, Salisbury outshot St. Mary's, 21-3, with 11 corners to the Seahawks' one.

Becker and the back line displayed another fantastic effort, only allowing one shot on goal and three total attempts. Sophomore goalkeeper Drew Staedeli recorded his 15th win of the season, pulling in one save for the game. The defense has now totaled 12 shutouts for the season, giving up seven goals through 15 matches.

With the victory, the Sea Gulls claim the top seed in the conference tournament and a share of the regular-season title with one game remaining on the schedule. The top seed assures Salisbury a first-round bye in the tournament and home games in the semifinals and championship, should the Sea Gulls advance.

The men take the pitch one last time before the postseason, on Wednesday, Oct. 30, for senior day, as they take on Wesley College from SU Soccer Complex. Prior to the match, seniors Elliott Crompton, Quigley, Larry Cornish, Trevor Sharpe, Chase Humphrey, and Jake Perry will all be recognized. The game is set to begin at 3 p.m.
