Gulls move win streak to five with 2-0 triumph over Mary Washington

Box Score

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University men's soccer team extended its win streak to five with a 2-0 victory over University of Mary Washington in a rainy conference tilt Wednesday afternoon.

Junior forward Tanner East and senior forward Trevor Sharpe both found the back of the net in the second half to hold off the Eagles (7-5, 1-2 CAC).

The first half played out as a transition to a rain-filled match that made the surface difficult for ball placement. Salisbury went into halftime with six shots to Mary Washington's five.

In the second period, the Gulls (10-2, 3-0 CAC) put the pressure on early, scoring in the 57th minute. East was at the right place at the right time after senior midfielder Jake Perry touched a cross in his direction for the finish. The goal is East's team-leading fifth of the season.

With less than six minutes remaining in the match, Sharpe sealed the deal with a one-on-one goal against Eagles' goalkeeper Ian Waltz. Perry collected his second assist for the contest as he played a seamless pass outside of the 18-yard box for Sharpe to take on Waltz.

The backline continued to play unbreakable defense, collecting its fifth-straight shutout triumph, extending Salisbury's scoreless streak to 450 consecutive minutes. For the contest, the defense held the Eagles to just seven attempts, two on goal. The Sea Gulls still remain the only team in the conference to not give up a goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Drew Staedeli tallied two saves for the match and his 10th win of the season. He now sports a 0.44 goals-against average, only allowing five goals through 12 games. The Eagles' Waltz pulled in four saves in 90 minutes of play.

The Sea Gulls head to Buena Vista, Va., on Saturday, October 12, for their next contest, to face the Knights of Southern Virginia University. The game is set to begin at 12 p.m.
