Salisbury closes regular season with two wins

YORK, Pa. – The Salisbury University volleyball team completed its regular-season schedule on Saturday afternoon in a tri-match with York College of Pennsylvania and Franklin and Marshall College, picking up two 3-1 wins.

Salisbury 3, York 1

The Sea Gulls finished out their Capital Athletic Conference portion of the regular season, defeating the Spartans to improve to 7-1 in the conference.

After dropping the first set, 25-22, SU rebounded to win the final three sets, despite York keeping the match close, 25-20, 25-22, 25-23.

Freshman Katie Stouffer led Salisbury in the contest, tallying 17 kills with a .421 hitting percentage and one solo block, and senior Tam Weems added eight kills, while hitting .389, and recording three assisted blocks.

Finishing second on the team, junior Julie Poston registered 10 kills, while two Sea Gulls reached double-digit digs, with junior Michelle Meehan leading with 30 and senior Jess Tallant adding 16.

The setting duties were split between sophomore Kacey Franz and freshman Gretchen Vandermeer; Franz led with 22 assists, and Vandermeer tallied 17.

Salisbury 3, Franklin and Marshall 1

Salisbury earned its second victory in a similar fashion, dropping a close first set, 29-27, before taking the next three sets, 25-14, 25-22, 25-22.

Junior Nikki Binetti, who finished with six kills, led the Sea Gulls with a .556 hitting percentage and five total blocks (two solo, three assisted).

The SU offense was led by junior Mattie Smith, with 12 kills, and Poston, with 10 kills and a .421 hitting percentage.

Meehan had another strong defensive match, grabbing 21 digs, and Franz (20 assists) and Vandermeer (15 assists) continued to share the setting.

Salisbury now looks forward to the CAC tournament, and after earning a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed, the Sea Gulls will host the winner of the first-round match between University of Mary Washington and Frostburg State University on Thursday at Maggs Physical Activities Center.
