Sea Gulls' winning streak ends with 13-12 loss at Lynchburg

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The No. 1 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team was unable to extend its 31-game winning streak on Saturday, as the Sea Gulls fell at Lynchburg College, 13-12.

The Hornets took advantage of a slow start for Salisbury with three goals in the first 90 seconds of the game. In all, Lynchburg scored five goals in the first quarter, two of them coming from midfielder Max Voumard.

Senior attackman Stephen Norris netted the Sea Gulls' first goal to cut the lead to 3-1, before the Hornets would score their next two.

A goal with 41 seconds left in the quarter by sophomore attackman Wade Korvin made the score 5-2 going into the second quarter.

The Gulls cut the lead to one, at 5-4, after a one-minute unreleasable illegal body check on Lynchburg allowed senior midfielder Eric Kluge and senior attackman Evan Hammersly to each score man-up goals to start the second quarter.

After Lynchburg added its sixth goal, Kluge scored his second and was followed with a goal by senior midfielder Ryan Clarke to tie the score, 6-6.

Voumard, who led the scoring with four goals in the game, netted another just before the half, giving the Hornets a 7-6 lead.

At the half, Salisbury was outshooting Lynchburg 21-15, while both teams had won 7-of-14 face-offs.

The Hornets started quickly again in the third quarter, increasing the lead to 10-6. The Gulls answered back with a 5-1 run in the remainder of the quarter to tie the game, 11-11, going into the final period. Norris and Hammersly both scored two goals during the run.

The fourth quarter started with a Hornet goal, but Kluge's third goal tied the game, 12-12, with 6:59 to play.

With 15 seconds remaining, midfielder Vin Curran put away the game-winning score for the Hornets, getting past a Salisbury defender and ripping a shot from 10 yards out.

The Gulls totaled 39 shots in the game (six more than the Hornets), forced 22 Lynchburg turnovers and were successful on 14-of-15 clears.

Junior goalkeeper Alex Taylor played all 60 minutes in the cage, while making six saves.

The Sea Gulls now look forward to hosting Washington and Lee University on Wednesday at Sea Gull Stadium; opening face-off is set for 3:30 p.m.
