Salisbury falls to Delmarva Shorebirds, 3-0, in fourth contest with Orioles affiliate

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – For the fourth consecutive season, the Salisbury University baseball team played the Delmarva Shorebirds, the Single-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, tough in exhibition action, falling 3-0 in front of 2,096 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Tuesday.

Salisbury managed three hits, staying with Delmarva throughout the seven-inning contest, and used the evening to showcase the university and athletics department, while celebrating National Student-Athlete Day.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee raffled themed baskets, with the proceeds from the raffle and a portion of gate receipts benefitting the Brooke Mulford Foundation. Mulford is a local youth with Neuroblastoma.

The Shorebirds, who open their South Atlantic League season on Thursday hosting the Hagerstown Suns, opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Adrian Marian was hit by a Kyle Hamby pitch with one out and stole second. With two out, Nik Balog doubled to right-center field to score Marin.

The Sea Gulls, ranked No. 4 in the D3baseball.com top 25 poll and fifth in the American Baseball Coaches Association poll, threatened in the top of the second. Junior first baseman Quinn Griffith led off the frame with a double to the gap in right center off Shorebirds starter Brady Wager. Sophomore right fielder Danny Breen followed with a one-out walk, but Wager struck out Austin Barefoot and got Chris Gaines to ground out to third to end the inning.

The Shorebirds tacked on a pair to open a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Torsten Boss and run-scoring double from Wynston Sawyer.

Juniors Bill Root and Joey Jones picked up SU's other hits. Root had a one-out single to right in the third and Jones a leadoff single to right center in the seventh.

Salisbury is back in action on Wednesday, traveling to face Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., at 3:30 p.m.
