Salisbury takes first loss of NCAA South Regional in rematch with Millsaps, 7-0

Box Score

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Millsaps College right-hander Will Elmore threw a complete-game four-hitter, dealing the second-seeded Salisbury University baseball team its first loss of the NCAA South Region on Friday at USA Stadium.

The defeat sends Salisbury (32-8) to an elimination game with top seed Huntingdon College at 1 p.m., eastern on Saturday. If the Sea Gulls defeat the Hawks, they advance to play Millsaps (37-12) for the regional championship at 4:30 p.m. The Majors avenged an 11-5 loss to the Sea Gulls on Thursday to move on.

Elmore struck out seven and walked only two. The Sea Gulls managed two singles by Johnny Schiotis, one from Evan Graci and a ninth-inning double by Matt Cuervo. Millsaps scored two runs in the second inning, three in the third and one each in the fifth and sixth frames for the win.

Stephen Gates was 3-for-5 to lead three Majors with multiple hits. Blake Littlejohn, Isaac Glenn and William Chenoweth drove in two runs apiece.

Chenoweth gave Millsaps a 2-0 lead in the second with a two-out single up the middle after SU starter Dylan Anderson threw away a pickoff attempt at second base.

The Majors loaded the bases in the third with a pair of two-out infield singles and a hit batter. Samuel Doucet then beat out a roller to shortstop, to score Gates for a 3-0 lead. Glenn followed a with a two-run double off the left-field wall, but a perfect relay between Nick Gentry and Ken O'Neill cut down Doucet at the plate to end the inning. The damage was done, though, as Millsaps took a 5-0 into the fourth inning.

The Majors added another run in the fifth when Wes Perkins tripled down the left-field line and scored on an error. Keith Shumaker, who doubled with two out in the sixth, accounted for the final margin, coming home on a Littlejohn single.

Anderson fell to 2-1 with the loss, allowing 11 hits and five earned runs in 5 2/3 innings. Danny Druzgala and Connor Shockley combined to limit Millsaps to just one hit the rest of the way. Shockley threw the eighth and ninth, fanning four.
