Perry, Gulls shutdown Blue Jays for 1-0 victory

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – Senior midfielder Jake Perry cashed in on the only goal to claim victory for the No. 24 Salisbury University men's soccer team over Johns Hopkins University Wednesday afternoon.

Midway through the first half, senior midfielder Larry Cornish found a seam in the defense of the Blue Jays to give a flawless lead to Perry. Without hesitation, the West Deptford, N.J., native played a low-lined ball past Johns Hopkins' goalkeeper Matt Paris into the back of the net.

Salisbury (7-2) played a fairly even match with the Blue Jays in the first half. In the second, the Sea Gulls maintained the possession for most of the period, outshooting Johns Hopkins, 7-4. For the match, the Gulls took 14 shots, five on goal. Perry finished the contest with five shots, three on goal to lead the offense.

The defense saw contributions from every position as junior captain Kyle Westbrook kept the line focused on the task at hand. Holding the Blue Jays (2-5-1) to two shots on goal for the game, the back line consisted of Westbrook, senior Chase Humphrey, juniors Logan Becker, Michael Black and Jeff Byrnes, and sophomore Cy McNeill.

Protecting the net for the match was sophomore Drew Staedeli collecting his fourth shutout of the season and moving his record to 7-2. Staedeli ended nine opportunities in the 18-yard box with deflections and interceptions, as well as pulling in two saves for the contest. Paris finished with four saves.

The men now hold a 27-5 scoring differential for the season with 21 assists and a 0.53 goals against average.

Salisbury kicks off its conference schedule on Saturday, as Frostburg State University travels to the SU Soccer Complex. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
