Sea Gulls sweep Knights for first conference win

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University volleyball team used its 10th three-set sweep of the season to earn its first Capital Athletic Conference victory of the year over Southern Virginia University (25-22, 25-19, 25-23) at Maggs Physical Activities Center on Saturday afternoon.

Before the match, the Sea Gulls honored the seven All-CAC Silver Anniversary team members that were selected earlier this fall, including Chelsea Glowacki, Katie Korreck, Kara Kowalski, Stacey Krebs, Gabby Long, Abbey Petrecca, and Carley Todd.

SU (16-9, 1-4 CAC) jumped out to an early lead, after a kill from senior Julie Poston and a service ace from sophomore Shannon Russell put the Gulls ahead 2-0.

Three kills from sophomore Katie Stouffer helped push the lead to 7-2, while she tallied seven in the first set and led the team with 15 in the match.

The Sea Gulls held the lead until Southern Virginia was able to tie the game 11-11, but a Knight error, followed by another Stouffer kill regained a two-point advantage.

Southern Virginia (15-8, 3-2) continued to keep the set close from there, eventually taking the lead 15-14, but with the score tied 22-22, another SVU error and kills from Stouffer and freshman Rachel Pierson ended the first set for a 1-0 lead for Salisbury.

Stouffer began the second set with a kill for the first point, but the opening moments remained close with the score reaching 6-6, but a 4-0 run, capped by a block by freshman Samantha Chubb and sophomore Jordan Lawson, gave the Sea Gulls a 10-6 lead; Chubb led the team with six total blocks in the contest.

SVU cut the lead to 15-14, but kills from Stouffer bookended a 5-1 run that reopened the lead up to five, 20-15.

A block from Russell and Chubb and a solo block from Russell pushed the advantage to seven, before the Knights got back to within four, but a kill from Lawson helped end the set and give SU a 2-0 match lead.

Salisbury opened up an early 11-4 lead in the final set, while Stouffer registered three kills in the spurt and Russell added two.

The Knights returned the favor, using an 8-1 run to tie the score, but another Sea Gull spurt, capped by a Russell kill increased the lead to 20-16.

Despite SVU continuing to make the final set difficult, getting back to within one, 24-23, Stouffer capped her day with the final kill to take the match.

Russell and Lawson ended the contest with eight and seven kills, respectively, while Pierson and freshman Alexis Howatt both tallied 19 assists.

Senior Michelle Meehan led the Gulls with 16 digs, as she has captured sole ownership of the No. 3 spot with 1,839 career digs in the program's career leaders.

Salisbury now looks forward to another CAC matchup with Penn State University-Harrisburg on Wednesday, October 22; the match is set for 7 p.m., in Middletown, Pennsylvania.
