East, Zentgraf propel Gulls to 2-0 shutout victory over Seahawks

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 25 Salisbury University men's soccer team posted its eighth shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland at the SU Soccer Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

It only took 10 minutes for the Sea Gulls (9-0-3, 3-0 CAC) to get on the board. Junior midfielder Chris Kittelberger played a ball up the left side of the field to senior forward Tanner East, who drove the ball up the left side of the 18-yard box, dribbling between two Seahawk defenders. East maneuvered towards the left post of the goal, and placed a left-footed shot to the right corner, raising the score to 1-0.

The remainder of the half saw few scoring opportunities for the Gulls, who took a total of three shots in the half, two on goal, opposed to the Seahawks' five attempts, one on target. East, along with sophomore midfielder Nicholas McCrea, claimed the two shots on goal.

With 10 minutes remaining in the half, St. Mary's (6-6, 2-1 CAC) took its first shot on goal, an uncontested shot within the Salisbury 18-yard box by Zach Fontenot. The shot flew left, where junior goalkeeper Drew Staedeli propelled toward the ball, saving a sure goal, keeping the score at 1-0 going into the half.

The second half saw an aggressive offensive surge from both teams, with Salisbury taking a total of eight shots, while St. Mary's took five. The Gulls saw a quick opportunity from junior defender Zach Johnson, receiving a cross from junior midfielder Michael Feeney. Johnson placed a header off the Feeney cross, but the ball flew left of the Seahawk goalpost.

The Sea Gulls found the back of the net again in the 80th minute when freshman forward Brooks Zentgraf received a ball at the Seahawk 18-yard box from sophomore defender Kevin Miller. The heavily defended Zentgraf played the ball to his right, and took a shot toward the left of the goal. The ball would deflect off of Seahawk goalkeeper Zach Haussler and reach the back of the net to give the Sea Gulls a confident 2-0 lead.

The Sea Gull defense claimed the shutout with a combined effort from seniors Kyle Westbrook, Logan Becker and Jeff Byrnes, junior Cy McNeill and freshman Mike Kramer. Staedeli improves his record to 9-0-3, making two saves in the contest. Salisbury now sits atop the Capital Athletic Conference with a 3-0 record in the league.

The men will travel North to challenge the Lions of Penn State University-Harrisburg this Saturday, October 11. The last meeting between Salisbury and the Lions resulted in a 3-0 Sea Gull victory in 2013. First touch is set for 2 p.m.
