Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – On a day where the wind would not quit at the SU Baseball Field, neither would the No. 13 Salisbury University baseball team's bats. The Sea Gulls put up 18 hits in a 17-0, seven-inning win against Eastern Shore-foe Washington (Md.) College.
Salisbury (4-1) got on the board in the second inning as junior Jordan Gowe opened the frame with a single up the middle. He stole second and came home on senior Ken O'Neill's infield single. O'Neill hit a sharp grounder down the third-base line. Shoreman Garrett Richardello made a strong diving stop on the ball, but his throw across the diamond sailed over the head of first baseman Dennis Thomas, bringing home Gowe for the 1-0 Salisbury lead, but the Sea Gull bats were not done.
Salisbury would string together seven hits in the inning to open up a 7-0 lead. Junior Kyle Hayman drove in two in the inning as did junior first baseman Bobby Sanzone.
The seven runs would be plenty for the Salisbury pitching staff, beginning with starter Brett Collacchi, who worked six innings to collect his second win of the year.
The Bear, Del., native gave up a pair of hits in the first inning, but got out of the early jam with a strikeout and catcher Austin Barefoot gunned down Scott Matthews, who had strayed too far from second base for the inning-ending double play.
Collacchi gave up just one hit after the first inning, surrendering one walk and striking out one while keeping his earned-run average unblemished through two starts.
Salisbury kept the offensive attack on in the third, when senior Johnny Schiotis opened the inning with a base hit and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He was driven home by classmate Bill Root, who later scored on a Hayman double.
Hayman led the way on the afternoon, going 2-for-4 while driving in three. Sanzone also drove home three while he and designated hitter Sam Myers each had three hits in the game.
Salisbury scored four runs in the third and finished the scoring with five more in the fifth and one in the sixth. Root knocked in two runs in the fifth when his hot shot up the middle hit Washington pitcher Billy Griffin in the foot and caromed into right field, allowing Schiotis and O'Neill to score; Root finished with three RBIs.
Salisbury freshman Joe Torres came on in the top of the seventh, to finish off the win, giving up one hit and striking out one. The game ended when catcher Joey Gumpman, who entered the game in the sixth as a pinch hitter, threw out Dennis Thomas attempting to steal third base.
The Sea Gulls are slated to be back in action this weekend, hosting the State University of New York at New Paltz in a three-game set beginning with a doubleheader at 11 a.m., on Saturday. The series is scheduled to be completed on Sunday afternoon.
