Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 10 Salisbury University baseball team earned a 5-1 win against Shenandoah University as four Sea Gull pitchers combined to scatter five hits Monday at the SU Baseball Field.
The Sea Gulls (9-2) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning, with leadoff man Kyle Hayman beginning things with a single up the middle and moving to second on Pete Grasso's single through the left side. When senior Quinn Griffith grounded a ball to third, it got through Michael Paul, allowing Hayman to score the opening run of the contest.
Salisbury strung together three two-out singles in the bottom of the third inning to double the lead. Griffth began things with an infield single on the left side and advanced to second on a wild pitch. The Federalsburg, Md., native advanced 90 feet on Bobby Sanzone's single to center field and was able to trot home when junior Jordan Gowe ripped a base hit up the middle for a 2-0 Salisbury edge.
Shenandoah (7-2) threatened in the top of the fourth, but Salisbury starting pitcher Connor Shockley escaped the jam. A walk and a single put runners on first and second with no outs and Shockley fell behind clean-up hitter Michael Paul 3-and-0 before working back to get to a full count and inducing a double-play ball from Paul. Shockley would strand the Hornet runner on third, preserving the 2-0 lead, by striking out Dan Powers.
The Sea Gulls got Shockley an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, beginning when Hayman was hit by a pitch from Shenandoah starter Phillip Morse and stole second. Hayman finished the day 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
Salisbury got runners at the corners with Grasso's single to right field. The freshman stole second and Griffith bounced into a fielder's choice when Hayman was hung up between third base and home, but was able to scamper back to third to load the bases with no outs.
Sanzone was hit by a pitch to score Hayman, pushing the lead to 3-0. Morse limited the Sea Gull scoring to the one run with a strikeout, ground out and a pop out to strand three Sea Gulls.
Shockley would work smoothly into the seventh inning before a soft grounder through the left side and a walk put runners on first and second with no outs, ending Shockley's day as Head Coach Doug Fleetwood called on sophomore Jon Schmedel.
After a Schmedel walk loaded the bases, Daniel Freshley ripped a ball toward first base, but Griffith was positioned perfectly, snaring the line drive and stepping on first to double off Nolan Overby. Schmedel would make way for Ryan Belanger, who got a fly out to end the threat.
Shockley gave up just three hits in his six-plus innings of shutout baseball, striking out three while walking five to improve to 2-0 on the year. Belanger would work 1 1/3 innings, getting the Gulls to the ninth, with the Sea Gull offense adding two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, to push the lead to 5-0.
Junior Kyle Hamby came on for the ninth, giving up a run on two hits, but finished off the game for Salisbury's ninth victory of the year.
The Gulls will be back in action tomorrow, traveling to St. Mary's College of Maryland for a Capital Athletic Conference tilt before returning to the SU Baseball Field on Friday, hosting Albertus Magnus College.
