Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 7 Salisbury University baseball team finished up a busy weekend at the SU Baseball Field with a 9-5 loss to Wesley College. This was the third attempt to get this game in, as snow and rain delayed the contest over a week and a half.
Wesley (7-7, 4-2 CAC) put pressure on the Sea Gulls early, putting across two runs in the first. Sea Gull starter, junior Dylan Anderson, hit the first two batters of the game, gave up an RBI single and then walked in a run. The Saratoga Springs, N.Y., native stranded three Wolverines and limited Wesley to a 2-0 lead.
Salisbury (12-4, 4-2 CAC) would answer back in its half of the inning, scoring three runs. With two on and one out, junior Bobby Sanzone drove one to left field for his first home run of the season, good for a 3-2 Sea Gull lead.
The Wolverines would tie the score at 3-3 in their half of the third, with a two-out RBI single by Matt Domian.
Anderson got help from his battery mate throughout the contest, as junior Austin Barefoot threw out runners at second base attempting to steal to end the second and fifth innings.
The Salisbury starter got further help from his defense in the sixth. With the bases loaded and one out, Ron Morello sent a grounder to senior Quinn Griffith, who stepped on first and fired home to nail the runner from third to end the inning.
The Sea Gulls would capitalize on the key defense in their half of the inning to take the lead. Senior Ken O'Neill led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch and then stole second. Barefoot laid down a sacrifice bunt to move O'Neill to third, who scored on a sacrifice fly by classmate Bill Root for a 4-3 SU lead.
Wesley answered back in seventh to score two runs to take a 5-4 lead. A two-run single by Joe Hummel would chase Anderson, who was replaced sophomore Connor Shockley. Shockley would let in two runs, both charged to Anderson, one on a passed ball and the second on a groundout for a 7-4 Wesley lead.
Anderson finished the afternoon allowing seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Salisbury got a run back in the seventh, when junior Jordan Gowe drove in a run on a fielder's choice groundout. Wesley would respond in the eighth, putting up two runs to increase its lead to the final score, 9-5.
Griffith led the Sea Gulls with two hits, going 2-for-3, and two runs scored, and Sanzone drove in three runs to pace SU.
After starting the season with 14 of its first 16 games at home, including the previous four contests, Salisbury will hit the road for a five-game road trip. The Sea Gulls will visit Newport News, Va., to take on The Apprentice School on Tuesday, March 18. That contest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
