SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 2 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team celebrated its Lax for Leukemia Youth Day on Saturday with an 11-6 Capital Athletic Conference victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland at Sea Gull Stadium.

Senior attackman Luke Phipps took a pass from sophomore midfielder Thomas Cirillo and scored from the left wing to give SU a 1-0 lead just 41 seconds into the game.

The Seahawks answered with two-straight goals to take the lead, but Phipps netted his second to tie the score with 6:25 left in the first quarter.

With the score tied to start the second, Stewart D'Ambrogi scored for St. Mary's to retake the lead, 3-2. On the ensuing faceoff, senior midfielder Chris Biank won at the "X," drove down the field, and knotted the score just 15 seconds later.

At the 9:22 mark, St. Mary's put in another go-ahead goal, but freshman attackman Nathan Blondino would score on the crease after a pass from senior attackman Rhett DePol to start a six-goal run that would last through the third quarter.

Thirteen seconds after Blondino's tying goal, junior attackman Jesse Rabishaw ripped a shot from the right wing to get the Gulls the lead, which they would hold for good.

With 1:57 left in the half, DePol took a pass from Phipps and scored a high shot from the middle of the box to give Salisbury a 6-4 halftime lead.

At the half, Salisbury led in shots, 23-15, and had won 9-of-12 faceoffs, while converting all 15 clearing attempts. For the game, Biank won 14-of-20 attempts at the "X."

DePol started the second half for the Sea Gulls taking a pass in transition from junior attackman Mike Kane and beating the goalkeeper one-on-one for his second score.

Phipps added his third, and senior midfielder Donovan Lange scored from 15 yards out to finish out the 6-0 stretch, as Salisbury led 9-4 heading into the final quarter.

The attack duo of DePol and Phipps both registered four points to lead the team; DePol scored two goals with two assists, and Phipps led the team with three goals, while adding an assist.

The Seahawks scored to start the fourth, but junior midfielder Sean Fitzgerald and Lange added the final two SU goals to cap the win.

Alex Taylor earned the victory, recording 17 saves, just two short of his career high, while moving him into the No. 3 spot on the all-time saves list with 499 career saves.

Salisbury is back in action on Tuesday, continuing a four-game home stand with a 7 p.m., faceoff against CAC opponent Wesley College at Sea Gull Stadium.
