Clewer stops six shots as No. 2 field hockey downs Johns Hopkins, 3-0

Box Score

BALTIMORE – The No. 2 Salisbury University field hockey team played through light rain throughout the night at Johns Hopkins University, collecting a 3-0 win against the Blue Jays, scoring all of the goals in the second half.

Salisbury controlled play in the early minutes of the game, keeping the ball in its offensive end, with a number of strong scoring chances, but could not get the ball past Johns Hopkins goalkeeper Zoey Atabek.

The Sea Gulls (8-0) ripped 15 shots in the first 35 minutes, and did not allow the first Johns Hopkins try until eight minutes remained before halftime. The Blue Jays (4-4) would put together three shots and two penalty corners in the next two minutes, but could not get one past senior goalkeeper Rachel Clewer as the game went scoreless to halftime.

Senior Summer Washburn got the first goal of the game less than three minutes into the second half, ripping a shot from just inside the circle on the left wing, getting the ball past Atabek and into the right side for the 1-0 lead.

Washburn would double the lead with 26:49 left in the game, off of one of 17 penalty corners in the contest. She received the insert from junior Samantha Johnson on the left wing, and put home a shot similar to her first goal to push the lead to 2-0.

The Blue Jays' best chances of the day came in a flurry with 16 minutes remaining in the contest.

Lindsey Adams ripped a shot from the right side off the circle, off a penalty corner, and Clewer made the clean save. With Alexa Lantiere charging to take a swipe at the rebound, Clewer cleared the ball out of the circle to preserve the two-goal lead.

Two minutes later, after good ball movement on another penalty corner, Adams got a shot from the left side, past Clewer, but junior back Breck Sullivan was on the goal line to make the defensive save. The follow-up shot by Johns Hopkins was stopped as well, but called for a penalty stroke.

Danielle Thompson was tabbed to attempt the shot, and tried to go low and at the center of the cage, but Clewer closed the pads to protect the lead.

Salisbury would find the back of the net one more time, with great persistence in the circle. Washburn took an initial shot from the left side, stopped by Atabek, and Casie Preisch was there for the rebound, but she was stopped by Atabek as well. The third time was the charm for the Sea Gulls as Becca Rinaca would gather it in for the third shot, into the open net, and a 3-0 lead.

Clewer recorded a season-high six saves to collect her first solo shutout of the season.

The Sea Gulls return to action on Saturday night, hosting No. 3 The College of New Jersey at Sea Gull Stadium, with the game scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
