No. 4 Sea Gulls take down Engineers, 11-5

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 4 Salisbury University baseball team lit up the scoreboard again on Monday, as it took on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in a non-conference game, defeating the Engineers, 11-5.

Junior Connor Shockley saw the start on the mound for the Sea Gulls. After walking his first two batters, Shockley was able to recover quickly and get out of the inning, allowing no hits and notching a strikeout.
The Gulls (6-0) would not get on the board in the top of the first, but Shockley continued to perform well on the mound, retiring the side and notching two strikeouts in the second.
In the bottom of the third, Salisbury would score the game's first run when senior Jordan Gowe hit a single into right field that scored senior Kyle Hayman to give SU an early 1-0 lead.

The Sea Gull offense opened up in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs to take a 4-0 lead, including a solo home run from junior Tyler Hrycak, his third long ball of the season.

Shockley carried his no-hit bid into the sixth inning, but the Engineers (0-3) would close the gap in the inning scoring two runs on the only two hits the Salisbury junior would surrender. In the bottom of the sixth the Gulls tallied six runs to put the score at 10-2. The scoring was highlighted by a two-run homer from Hrycak, his second of the contest, and a solo home run from senior Danny Breen.

In the bottom of the seventh, Salisbury recorded its final run of the game when junior Jake Dmiterchik hit an RBI single into right field that scored senior Sam Myers.

RPI tried to make the comeback in the top of ninth when they scored three runs to put the score at 11-5, but sophomore pitcher John Britton closed the game out to ensure the win for Salisbury.

Shockley received the win for the Sea Gulls, striking out eight batters and allowing only one earned run in six innings pitched, while Jon Schmedel and Kyle Skilling each worked a scoreless inning of relief.

The Sea Gulls will turn around tomorrow to travel to Newport News, Va. to take on the Apprentice School in a single game at 2 p.m., before coming back home to compete against Christopher Newport University in a Capital Athletic Conference game on Wednesday.
