Daiss throws 11 strikeouts; No. 4 Sea Gulls take down Builders, 10-1

Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Sophomore pitcher Ryan Daiss notched 11 strikeouts on Tuesday, as the No. 4 Salisbury University baseball team defeated the Apprentice School, 10-1 in non-conference action.

Daiss received his first start of the season on the mound for the Sea Gulls, limiting the Builders' offense on the afternoon.

After allowing singles to each of his first four batters faced, leading to his only run allowed, Daiss would recover, striking out the next three batters with the bases loaded to get SU out of the jam in the bottom of the first.

The Sea Gulls would retaliate in the top of the second, tying the game at 1-1 when junior Tyler Hrycak hit a single into left field that scored junior Alex Lipman.

In the top of the third, junior Jake Dmiterchik blasted a double down the right field line to lead off the inning. The Milton, Delaware native would eventually score to give Salisbury a 2-1 lead after a fielder's choice by sophomore Pete Grasso and an error by the Apprentice School's second baseman.

SU increased its lead in the top of the fifth to 4-1, with an RBI double from senior Jordan Gowe and an RBI single from senior Bobby Sanzone accounting for the runs.

After adding another run in the top of the sixth, the Sea Gulls would provide even more offense in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs. An RBI single up the middle from senior Danny Breen highlighted the scoring in the inning.

In the top of the eighth, Gowe would hit a single up the middle, scoring junior Kyle Goodwin for the lone run in the inning to go up 9-1. Gowe had a strong offensive day for the Sea Gulls, going 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored.

Daiss had a great day on the mound for Salisbury, pitching seven innings of work and recording a season-high 11 strikeouts before Kyle Hamby would come in for relief in the bottom of the eighth. Junior Jeff Oster would also pitch an inning of relief in the bottom of the ninth.

The Gulls would score one more run in the top of the ninth to cap off the scoring for the game at 10-1 when senior catcher Austin Barefoot scored on a throwing error by the Builders' shortstop after Breen reached on a fielder's choice.

Daiss's 11 strikeouts were the most in a game for a Sea Gull since Chris Greiner notched 13 K's against Frostburg State University on March 19.

Salisbury will be back in action tomorrow, Wedesday, March 18 when the Gulls return home to take on Christopher Newport University in a Capital Athletic Conference showdown at the SU Baseball Field. The first pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
