SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 15 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team opened the home portion of its Capital Athletic Conference schedule on Saturday afternoon with an 11-4 victory over the University of Mary Washington at Sea Gull Stadium.

Sophomore Carson Kalama bookended a four-goal first quarter for the Sea Gulls, as he finished the game tied for a team-high two goals in a balanced Salisbury attack. He netted the first goal three and a half minutes into the game, curling around the left side, taking a pass from junior Thomas Cirillo, and scoring a low shot.

Sophomore Griffin Melzer scored on a shot from the right wing with 8:23 left in the quarter, and senior Mike Kane gave SU a 3-0 lead at the 4:48 mark with a goal on the crease, after a pass in from senior Jake Rotman.

Kalama gave Salisbury the 4-0 lead with seven seconds to go in the first on the team's second-straight tally on the crease, scoring with a Mary Washington defender draped over his back.

The Eagles scored their first to start the second quarter at the 13:32 mark to cut the Gulls' lead to three, but a flurry of turnovers from both teams and strong play from the defenses held the game scoreless for the next 10 minutes.

Sophomore Brendan Bromwell broke the drought to push Salisbury's advantage to 5-1 with 3:32 to go before halftime.

The Sea Gulls took the four-goal lead into the break, while leading in shots 17-7, ground balls 21-11, and faceoffs, winning 5-of-8.

Mary Washington again cut Salisbury's lead to three with a goal five minutes into the third quarter, but the Gulls answered, as senior Sean Fitzgerald ripped a shot from the left wing into the top right corner of the cage to begin a 5-0 Sea Gull run.

Sophomore Christian Ottenritter pushed the advantage to 7-2 before the end of the fourth quarter, and Salisbury would open the final frame with a goal in each of the first three minutes.

Sophomore Andrew Ternahan scooped up the opening faceoff, ran down the right sideline, cut in and ran to the crease, and flipped the ball into the net with a backhanded shot just 38 seconds into the quarter.

Another score from the left wing from Fitzgerald 70 seconds later, and a tally from sophomore Nathan Blondino on the crease, in his first action of the season, closed the five-goal stretch for a 10-2 lead with 12:24 left in the game.

The Eagles responded with two straight, but junior Davis Anderson capped the win with a transition score to improve the Sea Gulls' conference record to 2-0.

The Salisbury defense, led by senior Knute Kraus' six caused turnovers, forced 14 total in the game in a strong effort that held the Mary Washington offense to only 23 shots, including 10 through the first three quarters.

Senior Connor Anderson played the entire game in the cage, picking up his fourth win of the season and making five saves in the effort.

Salisbury now looks forward to a matchup with No. 3 Stevenson University coming to Sea Gull Stadium on Wednesday, March 25; the opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
