No. 3 Sea Gulls remain undefeated in CAC, beat York 6-2

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 3-ranked Salisbury University field hockey team earned a solid 6-2 victory against Capital Athletic Conference opponent York College of Pennsylvania on Wednesday evening to remain undefeated in conference play.

The Sea Gulls donned pink jerseys for the contest, which was also their annual "Corners for Cancer" game. The event raises awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer.

Salisbury (10-1, 2-0 CAC) wasted no time getting on the board. Less than four minutes in, senior forward Becca Rinaca collected a save off the pads of York's goalkeeper and fired the ball waist-high into the cage for the 1-0 advantage. In the 23rd minute, she made it a 2-0 game on another unassisted score after finishing a rebound that clanged off the post.

With less than 10 minutes left in the first stanza, the Spartans (10-3, 2-1 CAC) had some good opportunities, but a beautiful diving save by junior goalkeeper Tressie Windsor and defensive save by senior Jessie Todd, just seconds apart, preserved the two-goal cushion.

With less than three minutes remaining in the first period, senior back Annah Brittingham made the most of Salisbury's six first-half penalty corners, scoring not once, but twice off of back-to-back corners. The Sea Gulls took a 4-0 lead into the second half.

York registered its first goal of the game in the 50th minute, and tacked another score on just over four minutes later to narrow Salisbury's lead to two.

A Salisbury timeout refocused the Gulls, and Brittingham once again ripped a shot from the top of the circle, which was tipped home by junior forward Natalie Wilkinson for the 5-2 lead and a hat trick. With less than 10 minutes left, Brittingham dished the ball to Wilkinson in front of the cage; Wilkinson collected the pass and fired it into the goal for the 6-2 advantage. An excellent defensive effort held the Spartans at bay for the remainder of the game.

Overall, Salisbury held a 26-11 advantage in shots and an 11-7 edge in penalty corners. The Sea Gulls have now outscored their opponents an impressive 51-9.

Salisbury now heads to Frostburg State University for a CAC matchup on Saturday, October 15. The game is set to start at noon.
