SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 9 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team used a 14-goal first half to take care of business on Tuesday afternoon in a 20-1 home-opening victory over Roanoke College in non-conference action.

Just over a minute into play, sophomore Kristen Murphy finished on a free-position attempt after getting fouled in the fan to put the Sea Gulls up 1-0.

At 28:05, Salisbury went on the attack again when senior Megan Wallenhorst dashed in from the left side and scored on a low-left finish.

After the Gulls capitalized on another free position attempt, freshman Gabrielle Mongno ran to the right of the net and took a ball from freshman Lindsey Wagner, scoring to give Salisbury a 4-0 advantage.

Roanoke got on the scoreboard at 24:05 when Catherine Pace scored off an assist from Claire Feeney, but Salisbury would score 10-straight goals, including a goal from freshman Ryan Schrader in front of the net off a tight feed from Wallenhorst, to put the Gulls up 14-1 at halftime.

A little over three minutes into the second period, Salisbury lit up the scoreboard again, this time on a man-down goal. Junior Gabbi Nieves drove down the middle and sent the ball past Roanoke goalkeeper Victoria Smith for her second goal of the afternoon.

Mongno, who led the Gulls with four goals on the day, tallied the next two scores before sophomore Dana King and Murphy each scored to put the score at 19-1.

Salisbury capped the scoring on the day with 11:51 remaining in the game when sophomore Sammi Quilter finished on a pass from senior Samantha Duranti. Salisbury scored on 20 of its 31 shots, garnering a .640 shooting percentage on the day.

Wallenhorst finished with two goals and a game-high four assists, while junior Hannah Young tallied three scores in the match. 

The Sea Gulls were relentless in the midfield and on defense all day, causing 11 turnovers and grabbing 21 groundballs; junior Marcy Lenz, sophomore Emma Wall, and Murphy each led SU with three groundballs.

Sophomore Gianna Falcone earned her second win in as many games this season, notching three saves in 30 minutes in front of the net.

Salisbury will be back at home on Saturday, February 27, when it hosts No. 7 Catholic University of America in another non-conference matchup. That game is set for 1 p.m.
