FROSTBURG, Md. – The No. 17 Salisbury University baseball team continued its success in the 2016 Capital Athletic Conference baseball tournament on Thursday afternoon, defeating Marymount (Va.) University 6-5 to come out of the first day of the championship weekend as the only remaining unbeaten team in the tournament.

Pitching controlled the game through the early moments, as freshman Ian Scheidemann only allowed five Saint hits and one earned run through the first six innings. For the game, he allowed just three runs (two earned) in 6 2/3 innings with two strikeouts in a no decision.

The Sea Gulls were able to scratch out the first run of the game, after senior Jake Dmiterchik smacked a double to left to lead off the second inning. After moving to third on a wild pitch, he came home on a two-out single by senior Tyler Hrycak for the 1-0 lead.

Marymount was able to tie the score in the third inning, with the help of a Salisbury error, before taking a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Luke Tyree.

Salisbury quickly responded in the top of the sixth to retake the lead. Junior Tom LaBriola singled to start things off, before advancing to second on a Dmiterchik sacrifice bunt. Junior Pete Grasso scored LaBriola on an RBI triple that he drove to centerfield. Grasso later came home on a wild pitch to grab the 3-2 edge.

LaBriola led the team in the game with three hits, while Dmiterchik and Grasso each tallied two; the trio combined for seven of Salisbury's nine hits in the contest, while each driving in an RBI.

The Saints again tied the score, as Conner Hall stole home in the seventh inning, but the offenses came to life in the eighth inning to break the stalemate.

In the top of the inning, LaBriola doubled to right and came home on a Dmiterchik single to begin a three-run inning. Grasso singled and advanced Dmiterchik to third, leading to a run on a Marymount error with sophomore Brad Keith at the plate. Freshman Jack Barry slapped a single down the right-field line, plating Grasso to cap the inning for a 6-3 lead.

Hall again came through for the Saints, driving in two runs on a single in the bottom of the eighth to get back to within one of the lead, but that is all the Gulls would allow.

Senior Connor Shockley came in to earn the save in the ninth, getting the final two outs of the game with the bases loaded. He forced a pop out to second, before striking out the final batter.

The Sea Gulls will now await the first game on Friday, April 22 between Marymount and Penn State University-Harrisburg to find out its opponent for the second day of the championship weekend. The Gulls will take on the winner of that matchup at 4 p.m., on Friday.
