SALISBURY, Md. – The first-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team picked up a home win over Montclair State University with a 9-7 final on Saturday afternoon to move to 3-0 on the season.

The Red Hawks (0-1) shutout Salisbury in the first quarter, while notching one of their own off Shaun Sterner's first of four on the day to send the game into the second quarter. Montclair outshot the Gulls 13-7 in the opening period.

Salisbury came alive in the second quarter as the offense started to find a ryhmth. The Montclair keeper, Lucas Jones stopped the first five shots on cage in the game until Aaron Leeds got the ball behind the Gulls' cage and found a wide open Cory Berry streaking across the SU logo at midfield. Berry went in uncontested and wound up to his desire and blew one past Lucas from 12 yards out to get Salisbury on the board.

Corey Gwin, Carson Kalama, and Adam Huber also scored before the Red Hawks responded to bring the score to 4-1 at the 10:18 mark following Huber's man-up strike. On Gwin's goal he gave his defender a swim dodge from the wing before slashing to the middle and finishing inside the right pipe with his right hand.

Sterner and Don Finn added back-to-back tallies for the visitors but Brendan Bromwell closed out the scoring for the half after he took his defender behind the cage and finished high.

The big second quarter put Salisbury up 5-3 at the break and in the second quarter, the Gulls flipped the script by putting up 13 shots to the Red Hawks' four.

Montclair outscored Salisbury 2-1 in the third quarter to set up an interesting ending. Freshman Josh Melton got the lone tally for Salisbury in the quarter as Carson Kalama picked up a ball off the end line following a missed SU shot and got a quick whistle to find Melton near the crease for the easy score.

Melton opened up the scoring in the fourth quarter; sweeping from right to left over the defense and getting his hands free to place it within an inch of the right pipe. At 7-5, Montclair went on to tie things up by the 4:54 mark as Sterner and Finn found the back of the net for the away team.

Garrett Reynolds was the Gulls' clutch performer down the stretch, getting his first two points on the day on the team's eighth and then ninth goals of the game. On the eighth goal, Reynolds was on the high wing and started sweeping with his right and caught the defense off guard as he slipped a pass down to Kalama on the crease for the marker which stood as the game winner. To ice the game, Reynolds started the same dodge that set up the assist prior but the defense under pursued this time with some confusion in guarding a pick. He stopped on a dime and stepped into a shot that he delivered to the low right corner.

Colin Reymann continued his strong play with seven saves on the day, including a few one-on-ones in front of the net. In front of Reymann, Andrew Ternahan and Will Nowesnick each had three caused turnovers, while Ternahan led the team with four groundballs. Ternahan also added an assist in the second quarter to give him his third point in as many games.

Salisbury will get its first test against a nationally ranked team next week back at Sea Gull Stadium as Gettysburg College comes to town on Saturday, February 25 for a 1:00 p.m., contest. The Bullets are ranked No. 5 and the last time the team's faced each other was in the 2016 National Semifinal game which Salisbury won, 14-6.
