Pitching Staff shuts down Dickinson as baseball sweeps

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University baseball team extended its winning streak to five in a row Sunday sweeping both games against Dickinson College at home. The Sea Gulls earned two victories by the scores of 7-4 in game one and 8-1 in game two.

As it did yesterday, pitching led the maroon and gold to victory in both games as the pitching staff as a whole turned in dominating performances.

Jeff Oster took the bump for the Gulls in game one for Salisbury (7-4) and turned in another solid outing. He went 6 2/3 innings allowing four hits and three earned runs while striking out 10 Dickinson batters throughout. It is the most strikeouts by any Salisbury pitcher in a game this season.

After allowing one run in the top of the first inning Oster settled down surrendering zero hits over the next five straight innings. He also forced the Red Devils to go three up and three down in three of the next five innings pitched.

Overall, Oster would face 28 batters allowing just two walks and recording four force outs and six groundouts.

The offense plated five runs in the first three innings to build a lead for their defense. After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first the offense managed to score two runs in the bottom half of the inning. A Tom LaBriola single and Jack Barry hit by pitch gave Simon Palenchar runners on first and second with two outs. Palenchar launched a ball down the left field line that was dropped by the outfielder allowing both LaBriola and Barry to score to give the Sea Gulls a 2-1 advantage.

In the bottom half of the third inning Kyle Canavan put the maroon and gold ahead even further with his RBI single to left field to plate Scott Ardoin.

After Dickinson had cut the lead to just one, 5-4, in the top of the seventh Jack Barry ended the Red Devils momentum. After LaBriola scored on a wild pitch during Barry's at-bat, Barry notched his third home run of the season belting a solo shot to left field.

It was all the insurance Andrew Kramer needed as he shut down the Dickinson offense from there. Over the final two innings Kramer recorded four strikeouts, including three in the top of the ninth, and allowed zero hits to earn the save and secure the win for the Sea Gulls.

Game two was a lopsided affair as Salisbury jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and never looked back cruising to an 8-1 victory.

Pete Grasso made the start for Salisbury and was sensational throughout. Grasso totaled six innings allowing just two hits while striking out eight of the 22 batters he faced.

Leading 4-0 in the bottom half of the fifth inning Ardoin helped extend the advantage by singling down the left field line to plate Robbie Jones making the score 6-0.

The bullpen took over from there as Connor Reeves, Ryan Gough, and Dillon Waters combined to allow just five hits, one earned run, two strikeouts, and five groundouts.

For the day the pitching staff combined to go 18 innings allowing 11 hits, five runs, and three walks while striking out 24 batters, totaling nine force outs, and 19 groundouts. The staff combined for an ERA of just 2.00.

Grasso finished the day 4-for-9 with an RBI and two runs scored. LaBriola rounded out his afternoon going 4-for-7 with two RBI and three runs scored while Barry finished the day 3-for-7, two RBI and four runs scored.

Salisbury returns to action on Tuesday, March 7, when it travels to Neumann University. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
