Late penalty kick brings down men's soccer at Mary Washington, 2-1

Box Score

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University men's soccer team traveled to take on the University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon and fell 2-1 on a late penalty kick.

The first half of play saw little action near the nets for either team. Both defenses limited the chances, with Mary Washington (7-2-1, 2-0 CAC) recording the only two shots of the half. The Eagles did hold a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks, but neither side was able to create any real opportunities.

Salisbury (5-6, 1-1 CAC) struck first in the 67th minute on its first shot of the game. Dylan Parks sent a cross into the box from the right side and Joseph Scarpinato headed home his first career goal to give the Sea Gulls a 1-0 lead. The assist was Parks' second of the season.

Mary Washington would respond just 57 seconds later to tie the game 1-1. Idrissa Barrie sent a cross into the box and Tommy Mead was able to capitalize on a misplayed ball by the Sea Gulls to find the back of the net.

The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the 81st minute on a penalty kick. Salisbury was called for a hand ball in the box, and Gary Foley's penalty kick went right over the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Trevor Brookhart.

The Sea Gulls managed to get off only one shot the remainder of the game, which was blocked by the Eagles' suffocating defense. Mary Washington's victory ended Salisbury's four-game winning streak.

The Eagles outshot the maroon and gold 7-3 on the day and took the only corner kick of the second half.

Salisbury returns home on Wednesday, October 4 to face St. Mary's College of Maryland at 4 p.m.
