Sea Gulls earn first victory of 2017 with win over Washington College

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury women's soccer team secured their first victory of the season on Tuesday afternoon by defeating their Eastern Shore rivals, the Washington (Md.) College Shorewomen. Dana Gordon, Mackenzie Ryan, and Carly Glassford each tallied a goal in the 3-1 victory.

The Sea Gulls jumped out to an early lead in the contest when Gordon, a sophomore midfielder, launched an beauty of a shot from the top of the box and sent it soaring over the outstretched hands of Shorewomen goalkeeper Courtney Colbert in the sixth minute of play.

The lead doubled less than seven minutes later when Ryan, a freshman forward, received a pass from sophomore Julianna Boller that carried straight through the middle of Washington's defense. Ryan caught up to the ball just in time to bang it through to the right corner of the net.

The third Salisbury goal came in the 79th minute on a chip shot from 20 yards out by Glassford, a sophomore midfielder. Washington would cut the lead to two on a rebound in the 85th minute, but it would prove too little too late as time expired shortly thereafter.

The Sea Gulls managed to control play from both ends of the field for much of the contest. They kept possession up front and used a blend of speed and physical toughness on the back end, limiting the Shorewomen to only five shots on the afternoon.  Youth was also on display in this matchup, as all three Salisbury goals — as well as the assist — were earned by sophomores and freshmen.

The team will take to the road for the first time this season as they travel to Lynchburg, Virginia this weekend to take part in the annual Shellenberger Classic. It will square off against tournament host Lynchburg College on Friday at 7:30 p.m., then close out the two-day event on Saturday at 5 p.m., against Roanoke College.
