Balanced effort from No. 7 Salisbury leads to 5-0 win against Mary Washington

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 7 Salisbury University field hockey team delivered a resounding 5-0 win against Capital Athletic Conference opponent the University of Mary Washington on Saturday evening in its Homecoming game.

Another sound team effort from Salisbury (11-2, 2-0 CAC) on both sides of the field contributed to the victory. In addition to outshooting Mary Washington (7-4, 0-2 CAC) by a 17-8 margin, the Sea Gulls made several key defensive saves, and a clutch save by sophomore goalkeeper Dom Farrace off a Mary Washington penalty stroke opportunity with less than two minutes remaining preserved the shutout, Salisbury's eighth of the season.

The Sea Gull offense was balanced with five different players scoring the five goals. Freshman midfielder Tara Flavin opened up scoring in the 12th minute, collecting a centering pass from junior midfielder Arielle Johnston to give Salisbury the 1-0 edge. Junior forward Tara Daddio made it a 2-0 game 12 minutes later when senior forward Emily Lemanski brought the ball into the circle and found Daddio on the left side for the score.

Less than five minutes into the second half, junior forward Meghan Jolikko found herself in front of the cage and collected the ball straight off of a defensive save by Mary Washington, finishing the play and giving Salisbury the 3-0 advantage. Jolikko's goal would be the first of two unassisted tallies for the Sea Gulls, the second coming off the stick of junior forward Rachel Domanico in the 46th minute; Domanico collected a loose ball in the circle and fired it into the back of the cage.

Johnston wrapped up the offensive effort in the 54th minute, taking a well-placed centering pass from sophomore forward Rebecca Lloyd and firing it past Mary Washington's keeper for the exclamation point on the win.

The Sea Gulls, who have outscored their opponents an impressive 48-8 in 13 games, now travel to CAC foe York College of Pennsylvania for a midweek clash on Wednesday, October 17 at 4:30 p.m.
