SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's soccer team picked up a huge 2-1 victory over No. 8 University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon on what was both Homecoming and Senior Day for the Sea Gulls.

Matt Mackenzie notched the game winner with just 2:39 remaining to hand the Eagles (9-1-2, 2-1-1 CAC) their first loss of the season.

Mary Washington struck first in the 18th minute on a Ryan Van Maanen goal. Justin Carey directed a short pass into the middle of the box, where Van Maanen received the pass and sent a shot just inside the right post.

Salisbury (9-2-2, 2-1-1 CAC) answered in the 38th minute on Ryan Spadin's third goal of the year to tie the game 1-1. Spadin capitalized on a one timer into the left corner of the net on a hard cross from Kevin Eriksen.

Despite getting outshot 8-3 in the first half, the Sea Gulls took the 1-1 tie into halftime.

The maroon and gold came out strong to start the second half, generating five shots in the first 10 minutes. The best chance of the bunch came on a curling shot by Matt Hawkins, but a diving save by Mary Washington goalkeeper Ken Kurtz kept the match knotted at one.

Senior Trevor Brookhart, who made six stops in the match, made a diving save of his own in the 64th minute to turn away Carey.

The Sea Gulls had a series of great chances with just over 16 minutes remaining, including opportunities by Spadin and Robbie Budd, but Kurtz came up with a pair of excellent saves.

Following a foul by Mary Washington, Mackenzie tallied his first goal as a Sea Gull on a free kick from 25 yards out, giving Salisbury the 2-1 victory.

Salisbury concludes its three-match homestand on Wednesday, October 17 against Christopher Newport University at 4 p.m.
