Daddio registers hat trick, Mitchell scores twice in 6-1 win over Catholic

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 8 Salisbury University field hockey team put on a dominant performance on Wednesday evening, defeating the Catholic University of America, 6-1.

The Sea Gull (8-2) offense came out swinging, netting three goals on three shots in a span of four minutes in the first half. Junior forward Tara Daddio got things started for the Gulls in the 16th minute, taking a feed from Kellie Pickford in front of the net and finished for the 1-0 Salisbury lead. Less than two minutes later, freshman forward McKenzie Mitchell maneuvered her way through high traffic in the Catholic circle and fired a shot into the back of the cage. She would capitalize again just 1:58 later on a similar maneuver.

The second half saw more of the same from Salisbury. Daddio maintained her presence in front of the Catholic cage, finishing a rebounded ball for a score in the 45th minute before taking a long cross from junior forward Rachel Domanico and netting her third goal of the night in the 61st minute. Sandwiched between those two Daddio scores was an impressive goal by sophomore midfielder Camryn Dennis, who stole the ball just outside of the circle, brought it in, and ripped a shot from the left wing straight past Catholic's keeper.

With the exception of two defensive saves at the end of the first half, Catholic (3-6) struggled to get on the stat sheet. The nearly-impenetrable Sea Gull defense limited the Cardinals to just one shot in the game, which resulted in their lone goal, coming with less than seven minutes remaining in the match.

The maroon and gold outshot Catholic, 16-1, and had an 8-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Salisbury opens up conference play on the road on Saturday, October 6, squaring off against Capital Athletic Conference opponent Frostburg State University. The game is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
