Sea Gulls defeat Valiants for Brohawn's 100th win

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University baseball team returned to action for its fourth game in three days when it hosted Manhattanville College on Sunday afternoon. Despite an early three-run hole, the Sea Gulls were able to get rolling offensively to earn the 12-6 victory and give head coach Troy Brohawn his 100th career win.

In just his fourth season at the helm of the program, Brohawn now holds a 100-32-1 record. He is the third coach in program history to reach 100 victories.

After falling behind 3-0 early, the Sea Gulls were able to string together four runs in the bottom of the second inning. A sacrifice fly by Justin Meekins scored teammate Scott Ardoin for the team's first run of the game. A sacrifice bunt by Kyle Canavan in the following at-bat pushed across Jimmy Adkins for run number two. With Ron Villone on second base, Jay Perry came stepped to the plate in the following at-bat and promptly took the first pitch he saw and launched it over the left field fence for a two-run home run.

The maroon and gold picked up where it left off in the third inning, scoring three more runs. An ground out by Adkins pushed Matt Padeway home from third base. Ardoin would score on a passed ball two at-bats later. The final run of the inning came on an double down the left field line by Meekins.

Salisbury eliminated any hope of a Manhattanville comeback by putting up three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Perry tacked on a third RBI by driving in Canavan with a double to right field. He then scored on a Colby Dean single to right field two at-bats later. The final run of the game came on a double steal that led to a throwing error by the Manhattanville catcher, helping Dean to score from second base.

Jack Cheney earned the win with five innings of relief work, striking out five batters in the process. As a whole, the team successfully swiped nine bases and laid down five sacrifice bunts.

Salisbury's game scheduled against Johns Hopkins University on Monday, March 12 has been postponed due to expected weather, a make-up date has not been announced. The team returns to action on Tuesday, March 13 when it hosts Virginia Wesleyan University. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
