SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 8 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team defeated Eastern Shore rival Washington College on Saturday afternoon, 7-6, in an overtime thriller.

It was just the second time in the 52-game series a team has claimed victory in overtime with the last overtime game coming back on May 1, 1999. The Sea Gulls earned a 16-15 win over the Shoremen that afternoon in Chestertown, Maryland.

Corey Gwin, who netted four goals on the afternoon, netted the first and more importantly last markers of the day for Salisbury (6-2) to earn the overtime win. Gwin's game-winning goal with 56 seconds left to play in overtime gave the Sea Gulls their first one-goal victory over Washington College (5-2) in Salisbury in the series history.   

The Sea Gulls jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as Gwin found the back of the net just 54 second into the contest. Gwin finished off a nice pass from Josh Melton, who completed his day with one goal and an assist, to give Salisbury the early advantage.  

However, two straight goals by the Shoremen gave the visitors a 2-1 midway through the second. However, Salisbury grabbed a two-goal lead behind its own run late in the second quarter to give the home team a 3-2 advantage at the break.

After two straight goals by Salisbury in the third quarter from Pierre Armstrong and Gwin, Washington College managed to level the game at 5-5 with two goals of its own in the final two minutes of action in the quarter.

Gwin netted his third marker of the day with 8:56 to play in the fourth, but the Shoremen got the final say as Tanner Barbieri tallied his only goal of the contest with 25 seconds left to play in regulation to send the game to overtime.

Each team had an opportunity to claim victory in the extra period but neither were able to find the net until Gwin posted his final goal of the day on an unassisted effort to deliver the victory and Clark Cup to the Sea Gulls.

Brandon Warren anchored a strong defensive performance recording a career-high 12 saves including nine in the second half alone. Cory Berry posted a team-high two caused turnovers while Kyle Tucker, John Wheeler, and Warren all scooped up three groundballs contributing to the team's 35 total.     

Salisbury returns to action on Saturday, March 24 when it begins Capital Athletic Conference play against No. 4 York College of Pennsylvania. The game will be a rematch of last season's CAC championship game and is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
