Career firsts push men's soccer past Catholic, 3-1

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Salisbury University men's soccer team finished non-conference play with a 3-1 victory over The Catholic University of America on Wednesday.

Catholic (4-3) and Salisbury (7-1-1) opened the game strong offensively, combining for six shots in the first 13 minutes. Both offenses went dry after that time, however, with neither team recording a shot for the next 18 minutes of play.

Salisbury's best chance of the half came with just under five minutes to go as Ryan Spadin's header forced the Catholic goalkeeper to make a diving save.

The Sea Gulls and Cardinals went to halftime tied 0-0, with the maroon and gold outshooting Catholic 5-3 and accounting for all three corner kicks.

The second half saw much more action, with Salisbury breaking through in the 60th minute. Connor Banks scored his first career goal after coming up with a loose ball in the box and putting it through the keeper's legs for a 1-0 lead.

Cullen Myers also tallied his first career goal just over four minutes later to push the score to 2-0. Myers received a pass from Ryan Knaggs and got past the goalie to score on an open net.

Catholic then cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 75th minute, converting on a penalty kick after a foul inside the box.

Knaggs joined the action with the first goal of his career as well, scoring on a free kick from just outside the 18. His insurance goal came just 1:25 after the Cardinals got on the board.

The Sea Gulls outshot the Cardinals 13-11 in the game while allowing just four shots on goal. Trevor Brookhart recorded one save in the first half, while Sam Roy saved two in the second.

Salisbury returns home to begin Capital Athletic Conference play on Saturday, September 29. The Sea Gulls are scheduled to take on Frostburg State University at 1 p.m.
