SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 22 Salisbury University baseball team defeated visiting Hampden-Sydney College on Wednesday afternoon, 12-2, following a late offensive outburst.

Salisbury (8-4-1) was unable to solve Tigers starting pitcher Kieran Conway as it was held hitless through the first four innings, but finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning to score the first run of the game. The Sea Gulls were able to load the bases with one out before Jimmy Monaghan sent a pitch deep enough into left field to bring home Jimmy Adkins on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

Hampden-Sydney (6-7-1) answered back in the top half of the sixth inning to tie the game at 1-1 with a two-out RBI double into deep right field.

The Sea Gulls then began to find its groove offensively, scoring three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. A Brad Haas double scored Brandon Bonesteel from second base with one away. Adkins was then able to score a second time after pinch hitter Matt Padeway reached base on a fielding error by the Tiger shortstop. Cameron Hyder drove home Haas for the final run of the inning on a slow-moving fielder's choice to third base, bringing the lead to 4-1.

Three more Sea Gulls crossed home in the seventh inning on a two-run ground rule double by Adkins and an RBI single by Haas.

The floodgates opened in the eighth inning as 11 batters came to the plate to drive home five more runs, including singles by Adkins, Haas and Ron Villone, a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch on Hyder, and a Bonesteel sacrifice fly.

Haas and Adkins led the team in the victory by combining for seven hits, six RBI and five runs.

Jason McDonough earned the win, pitching 4 2/3 innings in relief while striking out five batters in the process.

The team returns to action on Friday, March 15 when it opens Capital Athletic Conference play against the University of Mary Washington. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
