Brohawn named ABCA/ATEC National Coach of the Year

2021 ABCA/ATEC NATIONAL & REGIONAL COACHES OF THE YEAR

SALISBURY, Md. – After leading the Sea Gulls to their first-ever baseball national championship, Salisbury University head baseball coach Troy Brohawn has been named the 2021 NCAA Division III Coach of the Year, announced by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and ATEC on Thursday.

Brohawn, who just completed his seventh season leading the Sea Gull program, is the first Salisbury skipper to be named National Coach of the Year. The Cambridge, Md., native was also tabbed as South Region Coach of the Year for the first time.

Under Brohawn in 2021, the Sea Gulls finished 34-4 and won their first national championship in program history. Salisbury went undefeated during the NCAA Tournament, including a perfect 5-0 at the College World Series in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, sweeping St. Thomas (Minn.) in the championship series. SU finished the season on a 14-game winning streak.

Brohawn oversaw the development of pitcher Clayton Dwyer, a consensus Second-Team All-American and South Region Pitcher of the Year, as well as D3baseball.com Fourth-Team All-American outfielder Justin Meekins. Four other Sea Gulls made All-South Regional teams in 2021 and SU placed 11 men on the All-Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference squads.

The Sea Gulls excelled in all facets of the game on the way to the national title. Salisbury finished the 2021 campaign ranked in the top-20 nationally in several statistical categories, including runs per game (9.8), stolen bases per game (2.61), ERA (2.91), WHIP (1.15) and fielding percentage (.978).

Since arriving in Salisbury in 2015, Brohawn boasts a 205-59-2 record, and his .774 winning percentage is the third-highest amongst active Division III coaches. He joins Scott Brosius of Linfield College as one of just two men to win both an MLB World Series as a player (2001) and a Division III National Championship as a coach (2021).

The ABCA/ATEC Coaches of the Year are selected in all nine divisions: NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA Divisions I, II and III, Pacific Association Division and high school. Coaches of the Year are selected by members of the ABCA All-America and Coach of the Year Committees.

The ABCA/ATEC National and Regional Coaches of the Year will be honored on Friday, Jan. 7 in the main clinic hall prior to the start of clinics at the 78th annual ABCA Convention, which will be held on Jan. 6-9, 2022, in Chicago, Illinois.
