Women's Soccer stumbles against Methodist, 2-1

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team lost its first game of the 2021 season with a 2-1 defeat to the Methodist Monarch on the opening day of the SU Women's Soccer Classic.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Freshman Samantha Spears put the Sea Gulls on the board first with her first collegiate goal after Alyssa Chesney was able to find her cutting across the box in the 38th minute.
  • Six minutes later, the Monarchs tied the game after a goal by Madison Rizer.
  • Rachel Johnson scored the eventual game-winning goal after she fielded a well-placed pass from Natalia Marshall-Hewitt in the 44th minute.
  • The Sea Gulls threatened several times in the second half, including three shots off the post and outshooting Methodist 11-0, but were still unable to find the back of the net before time expired.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Salisbury outshot Methodist, 19-2.
  • Nine different Sea Gulls took shots today
  • Samantha Spears tallied her first collegiate goal.
  • Ally Goetz recorded four shots.
METHODIST GAME NOTES
  • Natalia Marshall-Hewitt assisted on both of Methodist's goals.
  • Mary Newman had four saves in the second half.

  • Salisbury will conclude the SU Women's Classic against the Generals of Washington and Lee University tomorrow.
