First-half flurry helps Women's Soccer take down Washington, 3-1

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team defeated its Eastern Shore rival Washington College, 3-1, thanks in part to a two-goal performance by Autumn Dougherty.

BOX SCORE

HOW IT HAPPENED

· Salisbury got things started in just the 13th minute of the match after Zakiyyah McMillan stole the ball in the offensive zone and quickly found her teammate, Autumn Dougherty, who was able to find the back of the net for the first Salisbury goal.

· Washington responded quickly, however, when in the 20th minute Keelie Verbeek took a corner kick that was able to bend just enough to force Salisbury keeper, Emma Hill, to field the ball in her own goal and nod things up at one.

· After the controversial call, the Sea Gulls wasted no time breaking the tie. Katy Poltrack intercepted a pass in the offensive zone. Poltrack passed the ball ahead to Dougherty at the top of the box. Dougherty's shot was slowed by the Washington keeper but the ball eventually trickled across the goal line in the 23rd minute.

· Poltrack added another assist just a minute later when a failed clear fell right in front of her in the box. Poltrack sent a low pass across to McMillan for a one-timer to put the game out of reach of the Shorewomen.

· The Salisbury offense threatened more in the second half, dominating possession with four more shots on goal.
