Strong second half lifts Men's Soccer over Eastern Mennonite, 3-0

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's soccer team earned its first official win under Scott Buete with a 3-0 win over the Eastern Mennonite Royals on Sunday on the final day of the annual Elmer Lord Memorial Tournament.

HIGHLIGHTS

 HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Sea Gulls got the offense going early with a header from Alex Floyd in the fifth minute but the shot was tipped off the post and out of bounds.
  • In the 39th minute, Eastern Mennonite got a great look at goal when Ford DeVault sent strike towards the bottom right corner of the net. A diving Ryan Socks made an acrobatic foot save to keep the game scoreless.
  • After a scoreless opening half, the Salisbury offense got rolling again in the 62nd minute. After a corner kick, John Ford sent a pass across the field to Beau Johnson who found a wide-open Kiran Chikmath in the box. Chikmath slotted a shot into the bottom left corner for the first goal of the game.
  • In the 87th minute, Brady Young sent a bullet of a free-kick through the Eastern Mennonite's keepers' hand for the second tally of the game.
  • Less than a minute later, the Sea Gulls regained the ball after a steal near midfield. Stephen Welsh found a streaking Ethan Dolezal to add the final insurance goal of the game.

 SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • The Sea Gulls tallied 19 shots with seven on target.
  • Kiran Chikmath, Ethan Dolezal and Brady Young each netted a goal in the victory. Chikmath led the Sea Gulls with four shots, all of which were on target.
  • Dolezal's goal was his second in as many days.
  • Dolezal, Alex Floyd and Cullen Myers each had three shots in the contest.
  • Ryan Socks drew the start in goal and collected four saves to earn his first career win.
  • Salisbury earned seven corners in the game compared to Eastern Mennonite's five.

 EMU GAME NOTES

  • The Royals notched four shots with all four being on net.
  • Ahmed Zaatar had four saves for the Royals.

 UP NEXT

  • Salisbury heads on the road for the two-day Seahawk Classic at St. Mary's, starting on Saturday, Sept. 11 against 16th-ranked Swarthmore.
  • The contest is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
