Brubaker’s two picks lead Football over Montclair St., 30-7

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University football team battled its way to a 30-7 victory over the Montclair St. Red Hawks on Saturday to open New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams traded punts in the first quarter before Salisbury broke the deadlock early in the second quarter. Diego Mendez found an open Ja'Vaughn Burton on the seam for a 21-yard pitch-and-catch to open the scoring.

  • Later in the second quarter, Caleb Brubaker would get his first interception of the game with just over three minutes left in the second quarter.
  • Salisbury would break the game open the third quarter.
  • On Salisbury's opening possession of the second half, Dario Belizaire broke off a 30-yard run to set up the Sea Gulls for a goal-to-go situation. But, Montclair's defense withstood Salisbury threat as Kollin Samaha converted a 28-yard field goal to push SU's lead up to 10-0 midway through the third quarter.
  • On the ensuing Montclair possession, Mason Murdock was intercepted for the second time by Brubaker, who returned the ball 79 yards for a pick-six. The extra point was no good but Salisbury extended its lead to 17-0 in the third.
  • After a blocked punt by Casey Counts set up Salisbury in the red zone, Belizaire cashed in the good field position with a 10-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter that gave SU the 23-0 advantage.
  • Montclair got on the board midway through the fourth quarter with a 21-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Brennan Ray.
  • Hunter Hruz iced the game for Salisbury with a four-yard touchdown run with 1:38 left in regulation to give the game its final margin, 30-7.
