Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball rides comebacks, Chew’s career night to best CNU, 3-1

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's volleyball team used a flurry of in-set comebacks to pull out a thrilling victory over the Christopher Newport Captains, defeating its Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) rival, 3-1 (25-18, 27-25, 22-25, 25-23), on Thursday night at the Maggs Physical Activities Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After trading blows to commence the first set at 4-4, the Captains opened up a 9-4 lead that eventually ballooned to 13-6 after a Megan James service ace.
  • From there the Sea Gulls regrouped and went on a tear. Delaney Madsen bookended a 4-1 push with kills, then after CNU got one back, Salisbury rattled off the next eight in a row. Madsen again rose to the occasion during the run, landing another kill and dealing three aces, including the run-closer that made it 18-15.
  • CNU stabilized and kept pace until the 22-19 mark, at which point Gwen Eustace and Jenna Feinauer rose up for a block, then Eustace and Madsen teamed up for another stuff and Jackie Mitchell powered down the set-clinching kill to finish it off at 25-19.
  • The second set began the same way as the first. Up 4-3, the Captains strung together six straight and 10 of the next 12 to surge ahead 14-5. Rebecca Frey dealt back-to-back aces to build the CNU margin to nine.
  • Salisbury rebounded for the next three points, including back-to-back kills from Angelina Casserly, to make it 14-8. From there the Sea Gulls nibbled off a few points at a time, getting it back to 18-15 on a Feinauer-Mitchell stuff.
  • Clinging to a 20-17 lead later on, the Captains used an attack error, Maddie Carter kill and Mackenzie Wright block to bring it to the doorstep of a set victory at 23-17.
  • Undaunted, Amanda Chew took over and led the Sea Gulls on another furious comeback. Chew accounted for five kills in the subsequent 7-0 run, including three strikes in a row to give SU set point at 24-23.
  • A bad set and Carter kill flipped the set point to CNU, 25-24, but Chew locked in again for the tying kill. Madsen followed with her fourth ace of the night, and Carter's attack error salted it away for SU, 27-25.
  • The third set provided more déjà vu. Down 6-5 early, the Captains netted five in a row to open up a 9-1 run, going up 14-7 after back-to-back aces from Carroll.
  • From there SU followed a familiar script. Casserly sparked a 7-1 run with back-to-back kills to get it back to 15-14, then after CNU notched two straight the Sea Gulls netted four in a row and six of the next seven. Brooke Young served up two aces in the run, and the Eustace-Feinauer picket fence up front put SU in control at 20-18.
  • CNU then flipped the script, striking back for a 5-0 run to go back up 23-20. The teams traded the next four points, with Alyssa Dozier's kill keeping the Captains alive with a 25-22 set win.
  • Set four opened with the teams neck and neck once again. After SU drew even at 8-8, CNU strung together four points in a row, capped by an ace from Noelle Starr that made it 12-8.
  • That's as far back as the Sea Gulls would fall this time, though. SU patched together two points three times in the ensuing sequence, drawing even again at 16-16 thanks to an attack error. After gifting CNU the next point, Madsen found the floor for a kill and another error gave Salisbury an 18-17 advantage.
  • The Captains nudged back in front 20-18 on kills from Carter and Dozier and an attack error, but SU drew even 20-20 on kills from Mitchell and Chew. Carter and Dozier answered with two more kills to make it 22-20 CNU, but Carroll's service error gave control back to Salisbury, then Chew blasted a kill and teamed up with Feinauer for a block to move the Sea Gulls ahead 23-22.
  • After a Lainie Putt kill to bring the Captains even at 23-23, Carter committed a service error to give Salisbury match point. Chew and Feinauer again sealed off the middle, blocking a final Dozier attack to put the set and the match in the books, 25-23.

  • The Sea Gulls overcame three deficits of seven points or more in each of the first three sets, including a nine-point hole in the second fixture.
  • The win marks the first time Salisbury has defeated CNU at home since Oct. 23, 2009. That day the Margie Knight-helmed Sea Gulls shut down the Captains, 3-0 (25-20, 27-25, 27-25), inside Maggs PAC. SU had lost its previous five home bouts against CNU.
