Men's Soccer falls in offensive battle against UMW

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University men's soccer team dropped its Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) opener in an offensive battle against the Mary Washington Eagles, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Salisbury offense started the match on the attack. After a throw-in, Ethan Dolezal headed the ball over to Sean Barwick. Barwick lifted his leg up and sent a one-timer into the back of the net to give the Sea Gulls an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Sea Gulls and Barwick were not done on the offensive end. Just three minutes later, after another throw-in for the Sea Gulls, Conner Appleby sent a pass across the box to an open Barwick. Barwick unloaded another one-timer into the back of the net to give the Sea Gulls a 2-0 lead.
  • The flurry of goals continued, but this time for the Eagles, as an Aidan Shell goal from Abel Luwis put the Eagles within one. Then a Josh Kirkland goal by way of Nelsar Castillo evened the score up at 2-2.
  • The Eagles used another two-goal run right before the break to extend their lead to two. Juan Vargas scored first in the 41st minute to put the Eagles up by one, then Julian Schmugge added another in the 44th minute to make it 4-2.
  • The second half started slow for both teams, but in the 74th minute the Eagles extended their lead to three. Kirkland scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Juan Vargas, to put the Sea Gulls in a 5-2 hole.
  • The Sea Gulls looked for one more chance to try and come back into the game. In the 85th minute, David Peters made a move past the defender in the box and earned a penalty kick attempt after a foul. Peters shot the PK into the bottom-right corner, just past a diving Eagles goalkeeper to reduce the Sea Gull deficit to 5-3.
  • It was too little, too late for Salisbury, though, as the Eagles ran out the clock and won the match.
