Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Dougherty cracks top-10 in goals in clash with No. 9 Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team fell to ninth-ranked Carnegie Mellon in an offensive thriller, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Carnegie Mellon scored quickly after Helena Spencer converted a penalty kick in just the first minute of the game.
  • Salisbury responded in the 28th minute after Autumn Dougherty slipped past the defense and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one to tie the game at one.
  • Just three minutes later, Dougherty used her speed to slice through the defense and field a pass from Alex Jankowski. She then shot the ball towards the far post and in to take the lead, 2-1.
  • The Tartans tied the game up in the 36th minute with a goal from Maria Askounis.
  • Carnegie Mellon tacked on two more goals in the final minutes of the period to give the Tartan's a 4-2 lead at halftime.
  • Both defenses steadied for the first 20 minutes of the second half.
  • Alex Adams notched a goal for Carnegie Mellon in the 60th minute to extend the CMU lead to three goals.
  • The Sea Gulls were able to draw a foul in the box and Lissette Carneiro converted the penalty kick to chip away at the lead with just over 20 minutes to go in the match.
  • Salisbury continued to apply pressure, Carneiro ripped another shot a few minutes late but the Tartan goalkeeper made a great save to preserve their lead and the game ended with a final score of 5-3.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Autumn Dougherty paced the Sea Gulls with two goals and three shots on target.
  • Dougherty's two goals today moves her to ninth all-time for career goals in program history. She is tied with three other former Sea Gulls with 21 career goals.
  • Lissette Carneiro also scored a goal.
  • Alex Jankowski had the lone assist for the Salisbury.
  • Riley Pinato tallied eight saves in goal.
  • All eight of Salisbury's shots were on target.
CARNEGIE MELLON GAME NOTES
  • Carnegie Mellon outshot Salisbury, 27-8.
  • Maria Askounis scored two goals.
  • Breana Valentovish tallied two assists.
  • Olivia Brand earned the win and tallied five saves in goal.
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury will host the Stevenson Mustangs on Tuesday, Oct. 25.
  • Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Sea Gull Soccer Stadium.
