SALISBURY, Md. – In front of a packed homecoming crowd, the Salisbury University football team picked up a 28-23 victory over the Rowan Profs to extend its win streak to five and improve to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Rowan struck first. On its opening possession, Mike Husni found Terry Carlstrom in the back of the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown catch.
- Salisbury responded in a big way on the ensuing drive. Hunter Cleaver mossed his defender for a 25-yard touchdown reception and tied the ball game at seven with three minutes left in the first quarter.
Â
- After a Rowan punt pinned Salisbury near its own end zone, Joey Bildstein exploded through the middle of the defense with an 84-yard run to put the Sea Gulls in a goal-to-go situation. A play later, Dario Belizaire was able to recover his own fumble in the end zone on a five-yard run to give the Sea Gulls the 14-7 lead with 19 seconds left in the first.
- Rowan tied the game on its first drive of the second quarter when Husni and John Maldonado connected on a four-yard touchdown.
- A Salisbury fumble set up Rowan inside the red zone on the ensuing possession. The defense stood tall and forced a 30-yard Jake Hurler field goal that gave Rowan a 17-14 lead in the second quarter.
- The two teams traded punts to start the second half before Salisbury put together a scoring drive after a good punt return into Rowan territory by A.J. Butler. Cleaver reeled in a 27-yard pass from Ben Hutchins for a touchdown on a 4th-and-12 play to give Salisbury the 21-17 lead.
- A methodical 10-play drive to open the fourth quarter extended the Sea Gull lead to 11 points, 28-17, which was capped off by a Bildstein four-yard touchdown run.
- Rowan drove down the field on its next drive with Maldonado receiving his second touchdown to cut the Salisbury lead to 28-23. Rowan went for two but Charles Barley broke up the conversion pass from Husni.
- Rowan got the ball back with 1:40 left in the game looking to take the lead. On a 4th-and-25 play, Barley intercepted a Husni deep pass to seal the win for the Sea Gulls.
