Women’s Soccer battle with No. 1 CNU ends in a draw

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team concluded the regular season with a 1-1 tie on the road against top-ranked Christopher Newport on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The defense was strong for both teams in the first half, with only seven combine shots taken by both teams in the period.
  • CNU threatened in the 25th minute after the Captains drew free kick just outside of the box. Sarah Rhiel ripped a shot into the top corner but Salisbury keeper Riley Pinato was there in time to make the save.
  • Both defenses held fast in the opening minutes of the second half. The Sea Gulls were able to break through in the 63rd minute. Lissette Carneiro sent a pass up to Autumn Conway just past midfield, who passed a perfect through ball to Autumn Dougherty, who proceeded to stroke a beautiful shot past the diving keeper into the back of the net to give Salisbury a 1-0 lead.
  • The Captains began to apply pressure on the offensive end, and tied the game back up in the 70th minute.
  • Both teams battled for possession for the remaining 20 minutes. Salisbury had a good look at the goal in the 82nd minute from Ashley Pantano, but her shot sailed just over the crossbar and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
