Women’s Soccer stumbles in C2C opener at Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team dropped its Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) opener to the Mary Washington Eagles, 3-1, on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After some back-and-forth play for most of the first half, the Sea Gulls scored after Autumn Dougherty sliced her way through the Mary Washington defense and ripped a shot from just outside the box into the top right corner to put Salisbury up 1-0 in the 33rd minute.
  • The Eagles looked to strike with just over five minutes left in the half. Shelby Dejong slipped through the Sea Gull defense, but freshman goalkeeper Riley Pinato made an aggressive play and came out of the box to knock the ball away before Dejong could get a shot off and preserved Salisbury's lead going into halftime.
  • Mary Washington tied the game in the 58th minute after Amanda Krest scored.
  • Salisbury had an open look in the 77th minute after Dougherty found Lissette Carneiro open just outside the box who ripped her shot just wide of the top right corner.
  • Mary Washington took the lead in the 84th minute with a goal from Hope Grzebien. Shortly after, Kaitlyn Vensen scored for the Eagles to give the match its final score of 3-1.
