Volleyball flies by Endicott, 3-0, in NCAA First Round

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Salisbury University volleyball team earned its first national tournament victory in 10 years, sweeping the Endicott Gulls, 3-0 (25-16, 27-25, 25-22), in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Silloway Gymnasium on the campus of Wesleyan University.

With the win, the Sea Gulls advance to the second round on Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. SU will face either eighth-ranked New York University or Westfield, who are set to play the 3 p.m. first-round contest on Thursday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tied 4-4 early in the first set, the Sea Gulls parlayed a service error into a three-point swing, using a Jackie Mitchell kill to go up 7-4. Leading 9-7 soon after, Mitchell, Amanda Chew and Delaney Madsen strung together a trio of strikes to build the lead to 12-7 and force an Endicott timeout.
  • The teams traded blows through the rest of the frame before Salisbury closed it out on a 6-1 run, with a service ace from Madsen providing the clinching point at 25-16.
  • The Gulls took a 4-1 lead early in the second set, but the Sea Gulls rallied to draw even at 5-5 on a Brooke Young kill. The score stayed tight all the way to the 17-17 mark, at which point SU netted six-of-seven, including four kills from Mitchell, to take a commanding 23-18 lead.
  • Refusing to fold, Endicott stormed back for six in a row, grabbing a 24-23 lead on an error. It was then that Chew saved the day, notching kills on back-to-back set points to keep Salisbury in the frame. Chew then teamed up with Gwen Eustace for a block that gave SU set point, and Angelina Casserly blasted the next one into the floor to ice it for SU, 27-25.
  • The third set began as tight as the first two, with Endicott finally gaining some distance by flipping a 7-7 tie into a 10-7 lead. Salisbury steadied up and drew even at 13-13, and the teams marched toward the finish deadlocked at 16-16, 17-17 and 18-18.
  • The Sea Gulls went two points clear on an attack error and Young kill that made it 20-18, but the Gulls answered with four in a row to take a 22-20 lead. Coming out of a timeout, SU refocused and tied it at 22-22 on a kill from Mitchell and ace from Grace Rail.
  • Mitchell then blasted another to the floor to put the Sea Gulls back on top, and a free ball from Rail fell harmlessly for a kill to give Salisbury match point. Rail found Casserly for the clinching kill to finish off the winning 5-0 run and put the set and the match in the books, 25-22.
