Women’s Basketball bested at Roanoke

SALEM, Va. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team couldn't sustain its strong start in a 58-36 loss to the Roanoke Maroons to open the Jean Beamer Tip Off Classic on Saturday evening at the Cregger Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Locked in a 7-7 tie halfway through the first quarter, Hailey Ader hit one-of-two free throws to give the Sea Gulls the lead, then Tori Rumbaugh found Ader inside for a three-point play to make it 11-7. On the next possession Alex Bull drilled a three-pointer to put SU up 14-7 at the 3:21 mark.
  • The Maroons responded with a 6-0 run of their own, getting back within 14-13 to end the period after an Ingrid Melo jumper.
  • Ainsley Raybold and Kolby Brown knocked down back-to-back buckets to open the second quarter and make it 18-13. RC answered with a layup, then Nadia Bullock sank a pair of free throws and Ashlynn Burrows sank a jumper to make it an 8-2 SU run and 22-15 lead at the 7:53 mark.
  • Down 24-17 soon after, Sayre Brandstatter drained a triple that sparked a three-point barrage for Roanoke. The Maroons hit five treys over the final 5:16 of the half as part of a 16-2 run that put the Sea Gulls in a 33-26 hole at the break.
  • After Burrows opened the third quarter with a layup, RC surged to a 17-2 run that built the advantage to 50-30 at the 1:31 mark. Alex Bull stopped the bleeding with a layup, which Morgan Micallef answered with a jumper that made it 52-32 Maroons at the end of the third.
  • Kayla Nieberlein opened the fourth with two free throws, then down 56-34 at the 4:55 mark, Emily Dilger broke away for a layup that proved to be SU's final basket of the day.
  • Roanoke only hit one more bucket beyond that point as well, a Morgan Carter layup that made it 58-36 with 1:21 to go, which the score would stay as the clock expired.
