Women’s Basketball endures setback at Rowan

GLASSBORO, N.J. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team dropped a 71-54 decision to the Rowan Profs on Saturday afternoon at Esbjornson Gymnasium.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Profs jumped out to an 8-4 lead early in the first quarter, but the Sea Gulls drew even at 8-8 after free throws by Kolby Brown and a Hailey Ader jumper at the 6:26 mark.
  • Grace Marshall answered for Rowan with a three-pointer, setting off a 14-4 run to give the Profs a 22-12 advantage. SU cut the deficit in half by scoring the final five points of the period, riding an Emma Wivell triple to close the first down 22-17.
  • Abby Wilkinson hit a jumper and then knocked down a trey to tie it 22-22 with 7:38 to go in the second quarter.
  • RU countered with two straight baskets, then after a Wivell layup the Profs hit the gas, closing the half on a 10-0 run over the final 4:37 to take a 36-24 lead into the break.
  • Danielle McCurdy's trey boosted the Rowan lead to 39-24 to open the third quarter. Ashlynn Burrows stopped the bleeding for Salisbury with a jumper, but the Sea Gulls never got closer than 12 in the period and exited the third trailing 56-40.
  • Rowan opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run to increase its lead to a game-high 66-40. From there the Sea Gulls chipped away and closed the game on a 14-5 push. Ader scored five points on six free throw attempts over the final four minutes, and Tori Rumbaugh converted a three-point play in the final minute to give the game its final 71-54 margin.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Ashlynn Burrows shot 6-of-8 from the floor for 12 points, plus three rebounds.
  • Emma Wivell came off the bench to share the team lead with 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting, including 2-of-5 from three-point range. Wivell also hauled in five boards in 22 minutes of action.
  • Abby Wilkinson made her first start of the season, netting seven points with six rebounds and three assists.
  • Hailey Ader also chipped in seven points.
  • The Sea Gulls hit 30.9 percent (17-of-55) from the floor for the game and went an impressive 16-of-18 (88.9 percent) from the free throw line.
  • Salisbury edged out the Profs in the rebounding margin, 39-38, and won the offensive battle 15-14.
ROWAN GAME NOTES
  • Grace Marshall led a balanced Prof attack with 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Marshall also swiped three of Rowan's 13 steals on the day.
  • Nicole Mallard netted 11 points with five rebounds, while Savanna Holt added 11 points and six boards.
  • The Profs shot 44.8 percent (30-of-67) from the floor and 7-of-16 (43.8 percent) from distance.
  • Rowan forced 21 turnovers and was plus-seven in the giveaway column.

  • The Sea Gulls close out November with a Wednesday night tilt at Elizabethtown.
  • Tipoff from Elizabethtown, Pa., is set for 7 p.m.
